Fly of the Month: Pheasant Tail Flymph

Each month we highlight a fly pattern that we think you should know and carry - this month it is Pheasant Tail Flymph!

What is a “flymph” you say? It’s a mix between a wet fly and a nymph; a term coined by Yvon Chouinard. The pattern is simple!

Fish the pheasant tail flymph like you would any wet fly pattern. Let it drift naturally in the current and bounce along the bottom. At the end of the drift, let the fly swing and raise it ever so barely by squeezing your hand gripping the rod. This subtle squeeze will usually result in a 1-2” rise in your rod tip, and when transferred to the fly, it is a motion that trout can’t resist.
