Fly of the Month: Bead Head Jig
Each month we highlight a fly pattern that we think you should know and carry - this month it is the Bead Head Jig!
One of many patterns of a Bead Head Jig fly that can be tied
The bead head jig describes a whole category of flies that can be fished like a streamer or a nymph - it’s a bigger pattern with a bead to allow it to sink fast. You can strip them through the water column with a quick rip, or slowly bounce them along the bottom. The idea is to mimic the look of a dead or dying fish, so erratic movements are great! Many fish cannot resist the urge to strike the bead head jig, and it works just as well with warm water species like bass as it does with big, selective trout.
